Best Mountain Bike Trails in North Carolina
Pisgah, DuPont, Brevard, Kitsuma. Our team's picks for the east-coast MTB capital.
Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina is the east-coast MTB mecca, and it's not particularly close. The riding is rocky, rooty, genuinely technical — nothing like the groomed flow trails that dominate internet bike content. Rae spent a month in Brevard in 2023 and came back evangelising about the tech riding. Jake has done Black Mountain, Heartbreak Ridge, and Kitsuma in the same weekend — don't recommend, but you can.
DuPont is the approachable one: waterfalls, flow trails, and a brewery in town. Pisgah is the one that earns respect. Season runs March through November; summer can be humid and full of yellow jackets, so we lean shoulder-season.

Common questions
- Pisgah beginner ride?
- Start with Bent Creek, not Pisgah proper. Sidehill Loop is a good intro. Pisgah tech will eat beginners alive.
- Shuttle options?
- Pisgah Adventure Company, Outfitter 27, Epic Cycles. Book a week ahead in peak season.
- Tires for Pisgah?
- Aggressive tread front AND back. Mud spikes not needed; sticky rubber + solid casing is.
