Winter Camping at the Ski Resort

Winter Camping at the Ski Resort

Camping, skiing and ski resorts may seem like an odd combination at first. However, they work well together!

Camping is a great way to enjoy an outdoor adventure in the snow. There are many activities to choose from, including skiing and snowboarding, splitboard tours or snowshoeing. Everyone gets their money’s worth on the slopes.

Camping and Winter Sports Have Many Advantages

Skiers who are passionate about their sport want to be first on freshly prepared slopes. You can camp right in the ski area! The majority of campsites are located near the ski lifts. You can reach them in ten minutes.

Spending the Night on the Ski Lift

You can also park your car directly in the parking lot of the lift. This is not allowed at all ski resorts, but it is allowed in others. We have had good camping experiences in the following ski resorts:

  • Kitzsteinhorn, Muhlbach(Hochkonig)
  • Flachau is here (official)
  • Russbach (Dachstein West)
  • Flachauwinkel (towards Zauchensee)
  • Katschberg (Sankt Margarethen).

Mountain rescue will not send you away if you have done your research in advance.

Snow Guaranteed Camping in the Top Ski Resorts

Camping gives you the chance to change your ski area each day if you enjoy variety. It’s possible to drive to several different ski resorts throughout the Alps. This will ensure that your winter holiday is not boring.

You can be sure of snow during your winter holiday with a campervan. The campervan allows you to choose a campsite according to the weather and snow conditions, without being restricted to an alpine area. With a little luck, winter camping in the cold season may even work in Germany, in the Berchtesgaden Alps or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you don’t have enough snow in Germany, try Austria. You can set up your camp in the Otztal or Salzburger Land, or even on glacier ski slopes.

Winter sports are diverse.

Enjoy Skiing, Snowboarding and other Slope Activities

Winter sports lovers! You can enjoy a perfect day on the slopes with the campervan. After waking up, you can get all the information on the weather and the conditions of the slopes. You can then drive to the resort that has the best conditions. You’ll have a wide range of options if you choose a campsite that is centrally located between ski resorts.

Your mini-camper will get you to the best starting points, whether you are looking for powder or slopes off-piste. You can choose a campsite in nature or one that is secluded. You can get away from the ski tourism here and enjoy all of winter’s sporting opportunities.

Ski and Splitboard Tours

Ski touring is not the most environmentally friendly type of winter vacation. Have you considered ski or splitboard touring? You can use your splitboard or ski touring skis to run up the mountain. You’ll then be rewarded by a descent that is (in the ideal case) still untracked.

You can combine camping and touring by staying overnight in your campervan, away from popular routes or ski resorts. You can enjoy the winter landscapes all by yourself.

Would you like to experience a splitboard tour, but have never done one before? We have the perfect event for you: the Splitboard Festival in Achensee. You can test out equipment from different manufacturers and take guided splitboard tours. Freeride-guide.com has more information on splitboards. You can book guided tours and rent professional equipment here, whether you are a beginner or a pro.

Snowshoeing

Camping in winter is a great option for those who don’t ski. Snowshoeing is a popular activity in Austria. Escape the camper to enjoy nature. These are some of our favourite snowshoe hiking routes:

  • Tux Alps – Viggarspitze (2 306m) via Boscheben (2.035m) from Meissner Haus (1.707m): 6km. 600 vertical meters. 6:00h walking. Difficulty: difficult.
  • Snowshoe hike Dreieckkogel, Southern and Western Styria. 12km, 450m altitude difference, 4h walking time. Medium difficulty.
  • Highsteiermark: A romantic circular hiking trail around Mitterbach. 7,5km with 195 vertical metres, 2:30h walking, easy difficulty.

Cross-country Ski Tours

Cross-country skiing is a sustainable alternative to skiing. You can enjoy yourself as a novice on a well-groomed trail. You can also try skating if you prefer something a bit more challenging. You can take a course to learn the proper technique. Soon you will be gliding across snowy valleys.

Winter Camping at Our Favourite Locations

You just need to choose the right campsite. In popular ski resorts, many campsites are close to ski lifts. A ski shuttle or ski bus is often available. The guests can also use the heated drying and ski rooms, which are located in the paved toilets.

A campground is different in the winter than in the summer. Many campsites within the camping ski area have a sauna landscape and wellness area so that you can relax after a day of skiing. The camping holiday becomes luxurious.

Trixi Ferienpark is our favourite camping resort for combining skiing with camping. You can read more about the camping facilities and other recommendations, such as wellness resorts or sports camps, in our blog post Winter campgrounds – Our favourites.

Camper Winter Equipment

No matter where you are – at a winter campsite in a camping ski area, on the mountain railway or in the middle of the mountains – you won’t freeze with our campervans. All Off vehicles come with a parking heating system. All our vehicles are equipped with roof tents and window insulation to help keep you warm. Snow chains are a great way to ensure that you have the right equipment for any snow conditions.

In our Fact Check, we aim to dispel any preconceived notions about winter camping. We also tell you how you can make your winter camping experience a pleasant one. Also, we explain how to pack and use winter camping equipment.
